Sharon Overton McKoon October 31, 1951- November 11, 2015 Phenix City, Alabama- Sharon Overton McKoon passed away on November 11, 2015, at her home in Phenix City, Alabama, after a battle with cancer. She is survived by her two loving sons, Josh McKoon and Patrick McKoon, her sister, Rosemary Rowell, and her two brothers, Ralph Overton and Hugh Overton, Jr., along with her friend, David McElwee and his daughters, Lindsey and Heather McElwee. Sharon was born on October 31, 1951, in Chambers County, Alabama, to Hugh W. Overton, Sr. and Hazel Clardy Overton, both now deceased. She grew up in Wadley, Alabama, until her family moved to Memphis, Tennessee, when her father received a significant promotion in his career, with the U. S. Post Office. She graduated from Whitehaven High School in Memphis, Tennessee and then from Auburn University, with a degree in Sociology. She began her working career with Crippled Childrens Hospital at UAB in Birmingham, where she helped families of children with disabilities. She then worked with the Department of Human Resources in Pell City, Alabama. For the last 29 years, Sharon served as the Victim Service Officer for the Russell County District Attorney's Office, where she counseled and helped victims of crime. She was active with victim's advocate groups, locally and statewide. She was a fierce advocate for victims of all types of crimes, but especially abused children and families whose loved ones had either been injured or killed in a violent crime. Sharon was loved and admired by many, including her colleagues in the District Attorney's Office, fellow employees at the Russell County Courthouse and many members of the legal community. She was a beautiful person inside and out. Kind, compassionate and loving, she loved working with children and had a soft spot in her heart for cats and kept many of them at her house. As a child, Sharon's family vacationed at Gulf Shores, Alabama on a yearly basis and from that she developed a life-long love of going to the beach and the Gulf Shores area. Most of all, she loved her boys and her family and was always there for them. A memorial service will be held for her at Trinity Methodist Church in Phenix City, Alabama at 1:00 p.m. Eastern Time on November 14, 2015. Always selfless, before her death, Sharon requested that in lieu of flowers she would ask that donations be made either to PAWS Animal Shelter or a favorite charity .
