Legend grew up in South Phoenix, Arizona and attended elementary and middle school there. He graduated from Central High School where he received a full ride basketball scholarship to Oregon State University.
He married his wife Shayla and they raised their two children Sanaya and Sakai in San Tan Valley, AZ. Prior to marrying Shayla he fathered one son Ajani Slaughter and one daughter Devynn Givens.
Legend had a successful career as a marketing manager for a real estate company called Bernard Allison for several years before deciding to switch professions to accommodate his young family’s busy schedule.
He then worked nights as a security manager for Allied Barton.
Legend’s greatest accomplishment were his children. He was a proud father and devoted his life to them. In addition, he was an outstanding basketball player and recipient of many awards.
During his tenure at Bernard Allison he was often recognized for his leadership, hard work and dedication. Legend gave 100% effort towards anything he was a part of.
Oftentimes throughout his years of work at Allied Security he’d come home with hand written notes from people he’d helped in some way expressing their gratitude.
Legend was a member of Progressive Baptist Church of Mesa, AZ. His favorite pastime was going to the movies with his two younger children Sanaya and Sakai.
He particularly loved a good meal and wasn’t afraid to try new cuisines. He was also a passionate basketball and football coach.
Legend’s favorite place to vacation was Las Vegas, Nevada however he also loved going to the California beaches.
Legend had a commanding presence! He was charming, handsome, silly and extremely fun to be around. His personality was captivating, his smile infections, his laughter contagious!
HE WAS MAGNETIC!
Legend was a positive and impactful role model. He brought out the best in those around him. He was authentic and inspiring! He wanted success for the people in his circle.
He particularly wanted the young athletes he coached(especially his son) to believe in themselves and to reach their full potential.
He thrived on divulging all of his basketball knowledge into his son Sakai. He’d often imply…”SAKAI WAS “BUILT FOR GREATNESS!”
He was so proud of the skill set of his beautiful talented dancing doll Sanaya, whom he referred to as “HUSHPUPPY!”
He consistently bragged on her level of intelligence and would post her straight A report cards on his locker at work.
Legend was elated to attend his oldest son Ajani and oldest daughter Devynn’s high school graduations.
His world revolved around his loving wife, whom he called “Brown Sugar” and his adoring children.
Legend is survived by his wife Shayla Givens; his children; Ajani Slaughter, Devynn Givens, Sanaya Givens and Sakai Givens; his mother; Dian Givens; his father Tony Brooks; his two brothers Tietwen Givens(Avera) and
Forest “Junior” Williams; four sisters Krishunya Givens, Atahmeaze Norfleet, Kadijah Williams, Shannon Williams; his mother in law Terri Mayberry; two brother in laws Donnell Mayberry(Monique), Tyson Mayberry.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents Prince Givens and Betsy Rivers A.K.A. Big Momma.
