Steve was a lifelong resident of Phoenix, and was born on April 20, 1960, to Kenneth and Helen (Manuelito) Sam. Steve was the youngest of four children. He attended Solano and Longview Elementary Schools and graduated from North High School in 1978. He received his letterman sweater in cross country and continued running half and full marathons until he was 58. Steve excelled in drafting classes in high school which led him to work in the field of architecture.
Steve began his career with the architectural firm of Irwin G. Pasternack in 1981 after studying for several years at ASU. Steve started work as a draftsman and quickly rose through the ranks to become a job captain and then a project manager. Steve spearheaded many projects for Price Club, Walgreens, and Discount tire. Notable projects include the Estrella Distribution Center, Tatum Point Shopping Center, and Squaw Peak Retail Center. Steve became an expert at tenant improvement development plans and for multiple restaurant and retail businesses of all kinds. Steve was very dedicated to his career and was well liked by everyone. The expertise Steve brought to the firm will be severely missed.
Steve was very proud of his Navajo heritage. He loved traveling, trying new restaurants, attending concerts, and following NASCAR. He went to many races around the country and his favorite drivers were Rusty Wallace, Matt Kenseth, and later, Daniel Suárez. Although he lived in Arizona, Steve was also an avid San Francisco 49ers fan, oftentimes pointing out their five Super Bowl wins.
