

Marie Pruitt Williams, born March 10, 1926, in Crockett, Texas, to Palmetto (Carry) and Peter Pruitt, heard a whisper of her name and peacefully surrendered while sleeping early Sunday, January 2, 2011. The oldest of nine children: Herman Pruitt, T.P. Pruitt, Addie Lee Davis, Bobbie Washington, Esther Washington, Willa Dean Ragland, Theora Foster, and Venora Bowman. Marie was baptized at an early age at Mr. Zion Ash Baptist Church, in Crockett, Texas; after moving to Phoenix, AZ she united with South Phoenix Missionary Baptist Church June 6, 1971 until she was challenged with multiple compromised health issues. Joined in holy matrimony to Leroy Groves, to this union two sons were born: Lee Edward Groves and Charles Edward Groves; she later married Arnold Ware to this union her one and only daughter Betty Jean Ware was born. In marriage to George Williams on March 8, 1980, she helped to raise a son Michael Williams. "Granny's" tree branches include (9) grandchildren: Nina Marie (Patrick), Derrick Lekeith (Redjerlet), Lee Jr., Rae Lee (Bobby), Anthony, Tammy (Willie Jr.), Jowel (Cathleen), Brent, and Kevin. (26) great grandchildren and (10) great- great grandchildren. She worked for both Happy-Happy Rest Home and Arizona State Hospital, from sun up to sun down, two jobs until retirement due to her illness. Marie worked in housekeeping and was known for extending care to others. She tenaciously furthered her education completing her GED and attending Rio Salado Community College. She was an American Legion Post #65 Women's Auxiliary member. Marie's hobbies were the love of family and cooking and she was affectionately known as "Granny". There are so many fun and loving stories of being at "Granny's" house. Many precious memories to be cherished by her surviving family: sons, Lee Edward Groves (AZ), Charles Edward (Joyce) Groves of San Antonio (TX); one daughter Betty Jean Ware (John) (AZ); a stepson Michael, and one sister Venora (Edward) Bowman; brother-in-laws James and Elijah Washington; (9) granchildren, (26) great grandchildren; (10) great- great grandchildren, and many mieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
