John Ray James, fondly known as “Double J”, left an indelible mark on the hearts of those who knew him. Born on December 24, 1956, in San Antonio, Texas, he embraced life with a passion for culinary delights, hunting, fishing, crawfishing, and exploring different corners of the world.
In the Army, he demonstrated his commitment to service and was honored with the Veterans Honor Medal. As an I&E engineer and designer, John was not only intelligent but also put in countless hours and hard work into the construction of Interstate 10, which ended up leaving him drenched in sweat as per usual!
A true adventurer and native of Gonzales, Louisiana, John’s work took him to various countries and states, allowing him to share his warmth and make instant friends wherever he went. Double J’s infectious laughter, generosity, and love for music and good company made him a beloved figure amongst his colleagues at Hargrove and Associates, where he retired in January 2022.
John’s zest for life was matched by his love for his late wife, Martha Lynn James. Double J was a devoted father to both Kristen Marie “Re” James and Cory Thomas “CT” James (Amanda). His legacy continues through his granddaughter Addison Lynn James, known affectionately as Addie.
Although John, aka the party animal, has left us, his memory lives on in the hearts of his surviving family members, including sister Barbara “Babo” Savoy (Keith); sister-in-law Marcia “Marty” Johnson (Albert); stepsons James “Jimmy” Gordon (Girlie) and Russell Gordon; and step grandchildren Robert, Daniel, and Jace Gordon.
John is preceded in death by his parents Magdalena and Thomas James as well as his sister Rosewitha Graber.
In his hometown of Pierre Part, Louisiana, John was not just a resident; he was a beacon of joy and camaraderie. As we bid farewell to this remarkable soul who passed away on January 17, 2024, of nature causes, let us celebrate the life of John Ray James and the enduring impact he had on everyone fortunate enough to share in his laughter and love. He will truly be missed by all the many friends left behind!
Celebration of life will be held in the near future and will be announced on his Facebook page.
