

He was born on February 3,1943 to Edwin and Margaret Chappell in Jacksonville, Florida. Hugh graduated from Landon High School in Jacksonville, Florida, Vanderbilt University, and the University of Madrid, Spain. He served as Lieutenant in the United States Navy and then attended the University of Florida Law School graduating in 1970. He practiced as a trial attorney until 2001 continuing his legal practice as a mediator until 2019.
He is survived by his wife, Linda of 54 years, his son Tyler (Sarah) and his granddaughter Catherine. He is also survived by his sister Nancy (Tom), brother -in-law Victor Halbach (Dagmar predeceased) and many nephews and nieces. Hugh’s sister Susie (Jim) are predeceased.
Hugh was very active in the Florida Bar Association, the Broward County Bar Association, serving as president of the Young Lawyers Section in 1976, executive committee 1978-1980, president of the Broward County Trial Lawyers Association 1985, Academy of Trial Lawyers College of Diplomates, Board of Directors 1985-1990. He was also a member of the American Board of Trial Advocates and the Florida Academy of Professional Mediators, Inc. He served on the Florida Bar Grievance Committee for two terms and lectured to High Schools on “How the Civil Court System Works”. Other accomplishments in the practice of law included being a member of the Million Dollar Advocates Forum and a lecturer for various Academy of Florida Trial Lawyers seminars.
Hugh served on several city boards in Fort Lauderdale and was an Elder and Trustee at the First Presbyterian Church, Ft Lauderdale. In addition to serving as a church officer, he taught church school to Middle and High students and was a Bethel Bible teacher for adults. He was a member of the Lauderdale Yacht Club where he enjoyed membership with R. Weasels. He was a founding member and past president of the Las Olas Homeowners Association, a member of the Ft. Lauderdale County Club, an avid fisherman and enjoyed playing golf. He also was a coach for the little league soccer and baseball teams for many years at Holiday Park and Coral Ridge. In all his associations and activities, he was a mentor to many of every age.
Hugh and Linda loved the joy of travel with incredible experiences throughout the United States and many countries around the world. Hugh adored his family and friends, and he will be greatly missed by them all.

A memorial service will be at First Presbyterian Church of Fort Lauderdale, 401 SE 15th Avenue Fort Lauderdale 33301 on August 9, 2025, at 3:00pm.
