Born April 5, 1942, to Albert R. and Alice Marcella, the second of six children, Al was a caring, loving and devoted son, husband, father, father-in-law, grandfather, brother, brother-in-law, uncle, and best friend, as well as a humble athlete, legendary swimmer, golfer, and tennis player. Words fail to capture his true brilliance and the capacity of his heart.
His immeasurable love, caring and concern for his family and friends was his greatest achievement and far and away overshadowed the countless accolades he earned. Being in love with his wife, and the simple pleasure of being with loved ones and friends meant the world to him. With his self-effacing humor, quick wit, willingness and wiliness to offer fond teasing, he had the ability to find and appreciate comicality through life’s challenges.
Al is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Dottie; his four children and their spouses, Kerry and Brian Sevigny, Michael and Jean Marcella, Cammie and John Weston, Janet and Terence O’Brien; his beloved grandchildren, Emma Sevigny, Kyle Weston, Matthew Weston and Wife Kirsten, Michael Marcella, Jason Marcella, Shannon O’Brien and Liam O’Brien.
He is survived by three sisters; Carol Sprague, Catherine Picard and Husband Joe, Mary Carey and Husband Leo, and brother Edward Marcella and Wife Mary Catherine. He was preceded in passing by both parents, a younger sister, Alice, and a grandson, Nick Sevigny.
A man of tremendous faith, Al was a dedicated Catholic through life from a young altar server to his sharing and ever presence at mass.
Following Catholic elementary and Malden Catholic High School, Al graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree, in 1963, from Boston College. Continuing his passion for learning, he earned two Master’s Degrees, from M.I.T.
In lieu of flowers, a donation to your favorite charity or to Children’s Hospital, Shriner’s Hospital or Special Olympics would be so appreciated and would represent the same caring Al embodied.
