Born in Los Angeles, CA, he was a resident of Port St. Lucie, FL, with roots in Hawaii. He moved to Florida for a few reasons, one to fish and the other to enjoy the warm weather, beaches and sand. He loved the sound of waves and was absorbed with it saying nothing for a long time, just inhaling the smell of the ocean air.
Ben served our country in the United States Air Force. He was a hardworking man. He was a perfectionist at his work and always wanted to please everyone.
He would light up any room he walked into with a smile saying “What’s up?” Even on a bad day, he would say it was a good day because he was alive.
Ben knew he lived on borrowed time, but he didn’t want people to pity him or them to know just how tired he was. He was a man’s man.
He loved music, but on quiet nights, he would watch a movie, snacking on ice cream and chips. On weekends, he would tell his wife it wasn’t a weekend until she would make breakfast.
Ben’s biggest love was fishing. He could be called at 3AM and he would jump out of bed at the invitation of fishing. Despite his love for fishing, his favorite meal was Ribeye steak and baked potato.
He was very adventurous, loving surfing, diving and anything to do with water, sun, sand and maybe a cold beer!
Ben’s proudest day was when his son was born. He walked on clouds and was so proud of his son. Smiling, he would tell him “Go out there….Be somebody”.
Survivors include his life partner, Marika Basti; son, Benjamin Mizuo; younger brother, Michael and sister, Debbie and half-sister Janna, of whom he helped raise. His sister Debbie would say, he made her who she is today because he would encourage her to never give up!
A Gathering of friends and family will be Saturday, August 26, 2017 from 1:00PM – 3:00PM at the Aycock Funeral Home, 1504 SE Floresta Drive, Port St. Lucie, FL. A Service will be at 2:00PM, with military honors.
