Sonya was born in Manhattan, New York, on May 19th, 1976, to her loving parents, Sandra and Michael Hughes. Growing up between Florida and New York, Sonya also had the privilege to spend her teenage years in The Bronx, NY, with her grandparents she loved so much, Carmen and Victor Spencer. During her upbringing, she became a devoted sister to Jermaine, Tiffany, and Andrene, following the creation of her own family with her one and only son, Calvin.
Graduating from Port Saint Lucie High in 1994, Sonya later moved onto the study of Health Administration, receiving her degree from Keiser University. Most recognized for her big heart and the love she poured into everyone she met, she would do anything and everything to make sure you were taken care of and in good hands. Though Sonya herself endured health challenges of her own from an early age, she was a true fighter to the core, which in exchange came to the fight for others. The foundation of resilience and strength inside of Sonya converted to a loving, bubbly, and insuppressible light, where her warmth was felt in every room she entered.
Aside from her heart, Sonya was known for being an avid foodie, a lover of dogs, a crossword fanatic, and her favorite, a bargain shopper! Her days were filled with genuine family time, known to be with her parents, sisters, and nephews whenever she could. Nothing brought her more joy in life than being around the people she loved most, and the peace children brought to her soul, knowing later in her life it was her purpose to become a grandmother. Sonya’s desire became reality when her grandson, Sonder, entered her life last year. Sonya’s love for her grandson became her power in life, something that he will feel and carry forever, something we will all feel and carry forever.
She is survived by her admirable son Calvin Clacken, alongside his wife Lauren, and tender grandson Sonder; her beautiful mother Sandra Hughes, and caring father Michael Hughes; her supportive siblings Jermaine Trotman, Tiffany Hughes-Pierre, and Andrene Hughes-Morales; and her delightful nephews, Kingston and Micah.
Sonya was preceded in death by her grandparents, Carmen and Victor Spencer, and Ethel and Clarence Hughes; as well as Uncle Errol Hughes.
A Visitation for Sonya will be held Friday, August 8, 2025 from 10:30 AM to 12:00 PM with a Funeral Service to follow at Aycock Funeral Home, 1504 Southeast Floresta Drive, Port St. Lucie, FL 34983.
