Born in Jacksonville, FL, November 1928, moved at an early age with his parents, Peter J. Hoppenbrouwer and Mabel P. Meyers Hoppenbrouwer to Ft. Pierce, FL, then later to West Palm Beach, FL. He attended St. Ann’s Catholic School and Palm Beach High; served in the US Army 1946-1966, retiring as a 1st Sergeant. He was awarded the Combat Medical Badge for service in Korea, 5 Good Conduct Medals, WWII Victory Medal, Occupation Medals for Germany & Japan, Korean Service Campaign Medal with 3 Campaign Stars, National Defense Service Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal (Lebanon), Republic of Korea Service Medal, US Presidential Unit Citation Ribbon and Republic of Korean Unit Citation Ribbon. Upon retirement from the Army, Walter was employed as Biology Laboratory Supervisor for 25 years at Miami-Dade Community College, North Campus, retiring in 1991. While employed there, he received recognition six times for the “Emphasis on Excellence Program”. He moved to Port St. Lucie, FL in 1992. Mr. Hoppenbrouwer was a life member of DAV Post 113, American Legion 29, VFW 471, annual member of Amvets Post 11, life member of Retired NCO Association, National Association Uniformed Services, Retired Enlisted Association, and Loyal Order of Moose 513.
Survivors include three sons, Glenn (Millie) of Decatur, GA, Jason (Georgette) of Rockledge, FL, Steve (ex-wife Genia) of Atlanta, GA; one granddaughter, Jennifer Lamar; five grandsons, Justin, Eric, Andrew, Ben, Sam; two brothers, Edward of Rochester, IN, James of Richmond, VA; five sisters, Mary Lindsey of Troy, AL, Josephine Connor of Port St. Lucie, FL, Hilda Carder of Monroe, MI, Gertrude McCall of Richmond, VA, Harriette Belter of Las Vegas, NV; and many loving nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
Visitation will be Thursday, December 4, 2014, 5:00PM-7:00PM at the Aycock Funeral Home, 1504 SE Floresta Drive, Port St. Lucie, FL.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be Friday, December 5, 2014, 11:00AM at St. Lucie Catholic Church, Port St. Lucie, FL.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Florida Sheriffs Youth Ranches, PO Box 2000, Boys Ranch, FL 32064.
