He was born on October 29, 1937 in Greenville, ME, the son of George C. and Mary Wheelden. George graduated from Greenville High School where he excelled in sports and scholastically. He was named to the Maine All-Scholastic Football Team in 1955, the only Greenville High School player ever to be given this honor. He went on to serve four years in the US Air Force. He then returned to Maine where he attended Hudson University, receiving his B.S. degree in Business Administration.
Upon graduation, he held positions with Sun Oil Co., where he developed retail outlets on the interstate system in the eastern U.S. During this time, he attended New Hampshire College where he pursued a Master's Program. George moved to Upstate NY and worked for Price Chopper Market in field operations and became a corporate buyer. After several years, he accepted a position as general manager with BJs Wholesale Club. BJs was a fairly new company, and George assisted in many locations in eastern New England, where he opened new locations and trained personnel. After leaving BJs he moved to Circuit City as operations manager where he worked for 9 years. He finished his career at Bob's Discount Furniture, where he was loved by all his colleagues.
George was an avid sports enthusiast all his life, following many sports personalities. His favorite team was the New England Patriots. For many years he supported them through thick and thin. George also enjoyed traveling with his wife Candy, visiting his children, and having family visit his home. Facing many challenges in his life, George remained positive as he overcame the challenges. Each time he felt that he emerged in a better place. One of these places brought him to his wife, Candy. She helped him increase his sensitivities even more for other people (and dogs). George added to his philosophy that giving was, in fact, receiving.
George was predeceased by his sister Donna, brother Bob and son Jim. George leaves a wonderful family: His wife of 21 years, Candy and three children: Kathy Heintz (Ron); Mike Wheelden (Laurie) and Maureen Wheelden. Also two step-children: Amanda Abbott (Jeff) and Jerrod Chase. George became very close to his younger brother, Dick Wheelden and his wife Corrine, and their daughters Cori and Lindsay. Included in this marvelous family are five grandchildren, one great-grandson, and several nieces and nephews. George would like us to celebrate his life ….not mourn his death…and to leave all of these people he loves with peace and strength and the thought that the best relationship we will have in life is the one we have with ourselves.
A graveside service will be held in the spring at the Greenville Cemetery in Greenville Maine.
In lieu of flowers, etc. please make donations to your local Alcoholics/Addicts Anonymous clinics in his honor.
