He was born in 1937 in Natick, MA to Fred Irving Hammond and Gladys (Rhoades) Hammond and made his living as a machinist, like his father. He owned his own house painting business for many years.
He was a resident of Thomaston, CT from 1968 until he moved to Portland in 2011 and was a long-time member of the Thomaston Liederkranz Men’s Club where he spent many evenings playing pool (leading to a few rows with the wife).
A consummate storyteller, he could often be found at a local bar or coffee house chatting with locals. There wasn’t a barista or barkeep he didn’t know by name. He made friends wherever he went – from policemen to convenience store clerks to dancers at a nearby club his friend ran. After retiring he “worked” part-time (unpaid) driving the “girls” to and from the club, getting them snacks during their shifts, and making sure they were safe. And this sums him up: there was no one he believed was beneath him and was generous with all that he had. He could sit for hours beside a lake and just take in the scenery. He possessed a dry wit that he carried with him until the very end. He loved to fish, listen to country music, and was an avid baseball fan (Go Red Sox!).
He will be deeply missed by his loving children, Carol Marquis and her husband Joel of South Portland, ME; Frank Hammond and his wife Mary of Auburn, ME; Martin Hammond of Lewiston, ME; Ricky Hammond of Greene, ME; as well as his former wife June Cote of Bristol, CT; and eight grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. David was preceded in death by his older brother Fred Hammond and his sister Carol Louise Hammond.
In lieu of flowers, David asked that mourners make donations in his name to your favorite charity or your favorite pub, where you should tie a few on and tell the stories he can no longer tell.
He will rest in peace at the Lakeview Cemetery in Wayland, Mass, with other members of his family, in a grassy spot overlooking the lake
