Edward Carlton Kimlin (Ed) was born and grew up in Poughkeepsie, New York, the son of World War II European Theater Veteran Carlton Kimlin and his wife Irene Brzezinski. As a child, Ed formed his character playing baseball and other sports in the streets and yards of his neighborhood, and was particularly close to his sister Roxann, his brother John, and his maternal grandfather Joseph Brzezinski. Driven by his innate competitive spirit, buoyed by the support of his family, and fueled by the friendship of his many classmates and teammates, Ed went on to excel in varsity baseball and academics at Our Lady of Lourdes High School in Poughkeepsie.
On account of his love of learning and commitment to education, Ed became the first member of his household to graduate from college by earning a BS in Chemical Engineering from University of Detroit Mercy. After graduation, Ed moved to the Washington, DC area and joined the US Patent & Trademark Office (USPTO) as a Patent Examiner. Ed flourished in his day job as an examiner, but he also found time to earn a JD from the Catholic University of America's night program while driving a taxi cab after class to make ends meet.
Ed ultimately settled in Alexandria, Virginia, married Ardith Ostby, raised a son with Ardith (Edward J Kimlin, MD), gained admittance to the Virginia State Bar, and grew into a well-respected supervising examiner at the USPTO. After several years of distinguished service, Ed gained election to the prestigious USPTO Board of Appeals and Interferences, earning the title of Administrative Patent Judge. Ed thrived in this role and consistently led the Board in productivity while maintaining outstanding quality ratings. When Ed finally retired from the USPTO to end his professional career, he finished as the most prolific author of appeals decisions in Board history.
Concurrent with Ed's decorated professional life, all the while he continued the pattern of his youth by becoming a standout participant in various forms of amateur team athletics including softball, flag football, and bowling. Additionally, Ed always made time to give back by providing countless hours of volunteer coaching to several youth sports teams as well as showing a limitless commitment to his son's athletic and academic endeavors.
When not working, playing, or coaching, Ed thoroughly enjoyed spending nights and weekends watching baseball, football, and basketball games and swimming for fun/exercise (particularly in the ocean). Of note, Ed was a man of deep faith, maintaining active membership in the Roman Catholic Church throughout his life. In his final hours, Ed was surrounded by family and passed peacefully shortly after watching his beloved Dodgers chalk up another commanding win.
Let us take this moment to remember and celebrate the life of a talented, driven, extremely generous, kind-hearted man who always gave his all regardless of the circumstances and who repeatedly beat the odds en route to achieving his goals.
