Hank was born in Waco, Texas, June 7, 1942, to Henry H. Dozier Sr. and Ethel (Mitrook) Dozier. He grew up in Portsmouth, New Hampshire.
After graduation, Hank joined the Army as a medic and was sent to a station in Ethiopia during the Vietnam War. He loved helping the troops, their families, and the local people and was interested in medicine for the rest of his life.
He was employed by the Urban Renewal Project in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, in the 1960’s and later began his journey as a physical plant administrator at the University of New Hampshire. As his career progressed it took him to Lamar University in Beaumont, Texas, University of New England in Biddeford, Maine, and St. Andrew’s School in Boca Raton, Florida from which he retired.
Hank’s career ended prematurely when he experienced two cardiac events in his early 50s. That didn’t prevent him from taking on new challenges within his community. He established a support group for patients with ICDs and related heart issues at York Hospital, leading the group for 24 years. He enjoyed sharing his love of learning about nutrition, exercise, and general heart health with others.
After moving to Portland, Maine, Hank committed to working with local city officials to make positive changes within his neighborhood and city. Hank was an emeritus member of the Northern New England Chapter Eastern Region Association of Physical Plant Administrators, of which he was a founding member.
Hank loved travel, enjoyed birding and bluegrass concerts. Hank pursued learning to play the banjo and mandolin, with questionable results. Best was his strong singing voice which he put to use entertaining a veteran’s group with a musical friend in Scarborough and other locations. Hank loved to create, usually in the fields of poetry, photography, writing and cooking. He was dedicated to Kizzie the cat, his best friend. He was a devoted member of St. Alban’s Episcopal Church in Cape Elizabeth.
Hank is predeceased by his mother, father, brother Richard Dozier of Portsmouth, and son Robert Dozier of Barrington, New Hampshire.
Hank is survived by his wife of 40 years, Beth Addison, brother Gary Dozier of Portsmouth, New Hampshire, son Larry Dozier and wife Dianne of Midlothian, Texas; daughter Miechelle Poulin and husband David of Somersworth, New Hampshire; daughter Liz Brumley and husband Geoff of Boise, Idaho; stepdaughter Christa Balderacchi and husband Brian Wagoner of Dover, New Hampshire; grandchildren Rhiannon and Ryan Dozier, Thomas Poulin, Zachary and Benjamin Brumley, Sylvie Frechette and Zeke Balderacchi and several nieces and nephews.
Hank will be remembered for his friendliness and generosity with strangers, outgoing personality and charisma as well as his love of storytelling.
As he desired, there will be no funeral services. His ashes will be interred during a private ceremony at a later date. Donations in his name may be made to St. Alban’s Church, Cape Elizabeth, Maine.
