Born on October 26, 1950, Mickie was the daughter of Alcide and Theresa Paquette of Brunswick, Maine. She devoted her life to expertly caring for others with quiet compassion and unwavering strength. She graduated as valedictorian from the Mercy Hospital School of Nursing in 1972, where she served proudly as class president—a reflection of her natural leadership and commitment to her peers and the nursing profession. She later earned her Master of Nursing degree from the University of Southern Maine in 1998.
On May 26, 1973, Mickie married George Alves, beginning a devoted partnership that would span more than 50 years. Their personalities and senses of humor complemented each other, with clever banter bringing laughter and warmth to their life together. Bound by love and unshakable friendship, they embraced life’s blessings and challenges together.
Mickie’s nursing career spanned 42 years, including 38 years at Maine Medical Center, where she began working in 1972. For much of that time, she served in the Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit, where her expertise and calm presence brought comfort to patients and families alike. Her commitment to education extended beyond the hospital: Mickie also served as a clinical instructor at the University of Southern Maine, teaching medical-surgical nursing and mentoring the next generation of nurses with both knowledge and empathy.
Outside of her professional life, Mickie was a passionate reader with an unmatched knowledge of literature. Her love of books was both deep and discerning, and she could always be counted on for a thoughtful recommendation—or a sharp literary critique. She was also unbeatable at trivia, known for her quick wit, astonishing recall, and quiet competitive streak that made game nights unforgettable. Mickie also had a great love for animals, cherishing the companionship and joy they brought to her life.
She is survived by her loving daughter, Briana Kelman, and her son-in-law, Dan Kelman, of Scarborough, Maine; her devoted partner, George Alves of Portland, Maine; her sister, Aggie Purinton of Hudson, Florida; and her nephew and godson, Tyler Purinton of Brunswick, Maine. Her enduring love for her family and her life of service will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
The family will hold a private service. In lieu of flowers, donations in Mickie’s memory may be made to the Parkinson’s Foundation and the Animal Refuge League Greater Portland, both near and dear to her heart.
