
PORTLAND -- Nunzi Mancini Jr., 80, passed away on Aug. 19, 2012, with his family by his side. He was born in Portland on May 30, 1932, to Nazzare and Mary (Iezzi) Mancini. Nunzi was raised on Munjoy Hill, where he resided for most of his life. He attended local schools and graduated from Portland High School, Class of 1950. Nunzi was an outstanding athlete with several accomplishments on the Portland High School football and baseball teams where he served both teams as captain. In his senior year, Nunzi was the first captain for Ed Hadlock. Nunzi was also All-Telegram in his junior year of baseball and All-Southwestern Maine for football his senior year. After high school, Nunzi served our country in the United States Air Force from March 1951 until March 1955. Among his several stations was a three-year service in post-World War II Germany during the time of the Korean War. After his service career, Nunzi went on to college. He graduated in 1960 from the former Farmington Teacher's College with a Bachelor of Science degree and then he obtained his master's degree from the University of Southern Maine in 1977. Nunzi went on to become a distinguished teacher with nearly a 30 year career. He began his teaching days in Kittery from 1960-1962 and then spent the remainder of his career at Falmouth Middle (Junior High) School from 1962-1987. Throughout the years, Nunzi devoted his life to his daughter, Genice. He never missed an event or special occasion. Among his hobbies was photography. From the moment Genice was born until she graduated from high school, Nunzi took hundreds of pictures and movies of her. He also rarely missed one of her sporting events throughout school or any other important event. Until his death, his daughter was his pride and joy. Nunzi enjoyed other hobbies as well. He was an avid sportsman and loved to go hunting with his brothers and friends. He also enjoyed fishing at his former lake home in Casco. He was an avid fan of the New England Patriots and the New York Yankees, although he watched the Boston Red Sox every night. He taught this daughter to enjoy sports and the outdoors as well. Nunzi was predeceased by his parents; and brothers, Dominic, John and Joseph. He is survived by his daughter, Genice Mancini of Austin, Texas; sisters, Antionette Morrill, Anna Tuttle, both of Portland, and Teresa LaCroix of Old Orchard Beach; and numerous nieces, nephews, and other relatives. Graveside prayers will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Thursday, Aug. 23, 2012, at Calvary Cemetery, 1461 Broadway, South Portland. Family and friends are invited to enter the Old Calvary section of the cemetery grounds at the office entrance. A light luncheon will follow services.
