Portland-Wally C. Green, aged 52, of Portland Maine, died at Maine Medical Center on January 4, 2015. Born in Alaska of parents Clyde Green and Sally (Vorce) Green, Wally grew up on Peaks Island, Maine. He attended Portland High School, and worked the greater part of his life in restaurants, having spent some 25 years with Old Port Tavern. As a youth, he enjoyed scouting, photography, and collecting Elvis memorabilia. In later years he could be seen sitting in his wheelchair at the entrance to Casco Bay Lines reading Louis L’Amour paperbacks, or socializing at the Commercial Street Pub. He loved Westerns, was a diehard Red Sox and Patriots fan, and had great reverence for Native Americans. He faced challenges independently in his life, but cigarettes and alcohol greatly contributed to his serious medical complications. Despite long periods of homelessness, he never asked for a handout. His heart was gold, and many regarded him as a gentleman. Wally is survived by his brother Robert Riggs from Uijongbu, South Korea, his sisters Sayra Huntley of Portland ME and Sandrae Green-Zettergren of Walla Walla, WA, his nephews Sherekon Green of Cumberland, ME, Anthony Green of Portland, ME, Joseph Riggs of Buena Park, CA, and Fenris Zettergren of Walla Walla, WA, and his nieces Syretta Green of Portland, ME, and Kitiara Zettergren, of Tumwater, WA.
A memorial will be held on Sunday, August 9, 2015, which will include a gathering on Casco Bay Lines pier, a ferry ride to Peaks Island, and a walk to some of the places Wally was known to frequent.
