She was born on December 26, 1937 to Chesolene Trammel Griggs and Forest Griggs of Broken Bow, Okla. Celeste left Broken Bow at an early age when she, her sister Lanette, and her Mother relocated to Little Rock, Ark. She was married to Robert Milholland in Columbus, GA. in 1954 while Robert was attending Officers training school at Ft. Benning, GA. They spent two years in the military stationed at Ft. Bliss, Texas then pursued a B.S. and M.S. degrees at Oklahoma State and a PhD in Minnesota in 1962, and finally landed at North Carolina State University in 1963, in the Dept. of Plant Pathology.
Celeste loved calling North Carolina home for over 50 years. Celeste and Robert had three children, nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren, who were her most prized possessions.
She was proceeded in death by her Mother, Father, and younger sister, Lanett Brown of San Antonio, Texas.
Celeste was a wonderful wife and mother. She was always there for her children; listening, loving, caring, and sharing. She was the heart of our home, the center of our family life. She gave our children so much through the years, not just food and clothing, but laughter, ideals, faith in themselves and in their God. You could say that she was one of the joys that made every day more special. Celeste had a rare gift of being totally open and above board with a wonderful love for her fellow human being. She never met a stranger and frequently went out of her way to talk with them. She was truly a people person.
She was always ready to give freely of her time, talents (interior decorating, painting, wall-papering), and energy to help those who were in need. "Mammaw" as she was called by her grandchildren, was a wonderful cook and her pies were a masterpiece, particularly her fired chicken and chocolate pie, which was "Revered" by the entire Milholland clan.
Celeste loved the Lord, and was devoted to her church and was an avid Bible student; always involved in either BSF, BAC, the Saltshakers, Woman's circle groups, or as a Stephens Minister Leader in her church at St. Andrews Pres., and Grace Community Church, and as a Bible Study Leader at Grace Community.
In her spare time, she sold Real Estate, and was an ardent tennis player who enjoyed playing for NCSU University team in the Raleigh area. She truly will be missed by all that knew her.
She is survived by her husband of 62 plus years, her daughters; Debbie Milholland of Greenville, SC, and Terrye Johnson (Steve) of Raleigh, son Paul Milholland (Chrysa) of Midland, MI; grandchildren, Memory Stein, William & David Cameron, Seth, Matthew & Noah Johnson, and Katerine Comelson, and Davis & Caroline Milholland.
A memorial service for Celeste will be held Tuesday, December 6, 2022 at 11:00 AM at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, 1701 East Millbrook Road, Raleigh, NC 27609.
