

Heaven’s newest storyteller is Dorothy Jane McCafferty Wolfe. Jane died surrounded by her family whom she loved dearly. Jane is survived by her husband and soul mate, Stanley Craig Wolfe; son, Robert Craig Wolfe; daughter, Dorothy Irene Cable (Christopher); granddaughter, Dorothy Elizabeth (Lizzy) Cable; niece, Lora McCafferty; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Debbie and Roy Knight; 4 nieces and 1 nephew; 5 great-nieces & 5 great nephews on the Wolfe side of the family.
Jane was born in Vincennes, IN and was preceded in death by her parents, Don & Dorothy McCafferty, brother and sister-in-law, Tom & Linda McCafferty, grandparents Marie Fisher, Thomas & Awilda McCafferty.
D. Jane married her husband Stanley in a military wedding on November 24, 1979, in Laguna Beach, California at the Laguna Beach United Methodist Church. In their 41+ years of marriage they lived in 3 California cities, 2 Virginia cities, Ewa Beach, HI and Raleigh, NC. They traveled to 30+ Asian, European, Caribbean & South American countries. As part-time RV’ers, they traveled through all 50 states.
Jane graduated from Marion High School, Marion, IN, in 1963. She was VP of the Senior Class and an Honor Society graduate. Jane graduated from Ball State University, Muncie, IN with a BS in Elementary Education with an additional minor in Library Science in 1967. She was President of Mortarboard (Clavia) and an Outstanding Senior. Jane was active in Delta Zeta Sorority where she was the University’s Panhellenic Rush Coordinator, Homecoming candidate, and was a recipient of the Florence Hood Minor, a national Delta Zeta award. Jane earned her master’s degree in library science (MLS) with a specialization in children and families from the University of Southern California in 1973.
Being a teacher, cataloger, and public librarian were Janie’s professions. She held positions from page to Assistant Director. When Jane worked at Anaheim Public Library as Branch Manager & the Library’s Youth Services Manager, she chaired multiple Santiago system Summer Reading Programs for all libraries in Orange County, CA. Jane served as VP of the Southern California Council on Literature for Children and Young People. She was a lecturer for California Library Association on executing a Federal Grant on libraries and parenting.
When living in Hawaii, Jane was children’s storyteller & Youth Services Manager at Ewa Beach Public & School Library. She was a guest lecturer at the University of Hawaii on story reading/telling and was the State’s Nene Book Award’s Chair. Janie was the State of Hawaii’s Marine Spouse of the Year in 1989.
When the Wolfe family lived in Fort Lee, VA, Jane was the President of the Officer and Civilian Spouse Club and the Marine Corps spouse coordinator. She was an instructor for the Army’s Combined Logistics Officers’ Advanced Course for international and multi-services officers. At Stan’s Change of Command Ceremony, Jane was awarded the Army’s Commendation Medal in 1995.
When her husband retired from the Corps in 1995, it was time to follow Jane’s career by relocating to Raleigh, NC where Jane worked for Wake County Public Libraries in the positions of System Public Relations Coordinator and Youth Services Librarian I at Garner’s Southeast Regional Library. She helped open from the groundbreaking through its opening in 1999 and was Youth Services Manager for Knightdale’s East Regional Library.
The Wolfes were members and active in Millbrook United Methodist Church. Jane loved participating in community groups. She served as VP, President, Christmas and Spring Luncheon Chair and Club Liaison for Millbrook Exchange’s Anne Gordon Center for Active Adults 55+ Club.
Jane volunteered telling stories to preschools, elementary schools, adult daycares, assisted living/Alzheimer facilities and senior church groups.
Janie’s family was her primary focus. She loved living in the home where young people liked to gather. Jane decorated her home for each holiday and loved wearing holiday attire and jewelry.
Janie was truly a cat lover, having kitties from childhood through adulthood. She was extremely proud of her “authorgraphed” book collection and her Longaberger basket collection. She was a lifetime Girl Scout in memory of her mother, Dorothy #1. Her daughter, Dorothy #3 is also a lifetime Girl Scout and Dorothy #4 (Elizabeth) is also active in Scouts.
Jane had that unique talent for making each person feel special. Her children said “Mom lived a fantastic life and leaves behind so many memories to all who crossed her path. She will surely be missed by all. She never met a stranger. Janie was a friend to all, best listener, and best hugger. Every time you see a lovable cat, think of our mom, Jane.”

A service of love will be held at 2:00PM on Thursday, October 28, 2021 at Millbrook United Methodist Church 1712 E Millbrook Rd, Raleigh, 27609. Immediately following the service a reception to greet the family will be held in the Pryor-Bradford Christian Ministry Center at Millbrook UMC.
