Fred was born on February 10, 1942, in Durham, NC to Fred and Mabel Brooks. He attended Durham High School and went on to receive his degree in Civil Engineering from North Carolina State University in 1966. He had a four-decade long career in construction, working on both private and public projects, including a role as project manager for the Dean E. Smith Center in Chapel Hill. He was a devoted member of Edenton Street United Methodist Church.
On October 28, 1989, Fred married Margaret Anne Guy, with whom he shared a lifetime of laughter and traveling.
As a young man, he loved playing bluegrass guitar, and shag dancing. He retained his love for bluegrass, beach music, and Wolfpack football throughout his entire life. After he retired from the construction industry, he found a love for gardening, as well as discovered a passion for history. He spent his days after retirement in Raleigh, working in the yard with plants and taking care of his golden retrievers, as well as traveling with Margaret around the globe, seeing the world and learning more about the history of the places they would visit. He was known his entire life for his infectious laughter and sense of humor, always working to make those around him laugh, and for his deep generosity of spirit.
Fred is survived by his wife Margaret Anne Guy; His three children, Gray Brooks (Cara), Kristin Vines (David), and Sarah Hagwood (John); and his six grandchildren, Allison, Addison, Kent, Ava, Pete, and Cole.
The family asks that in lieu of flowers, a donation be made in Fred's name to either The Dementia Society of America or the ASPCA.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared below for the Brooks family.
