Garold Michael “Mike” Deem, 63, of Wake Forest, died peacefully at his residence on January 30, 2016. He was born March 11, 1952 to the late Harold Robert Deem and Ora Lee (Gain) Deem in Parkersburg, WV.
Mike was a graduate of West Virginia University and Baptist University of America. Before illness forced him to retire, Mike took great satisfaction in his role as Fire Supply Supervisor at the Durham Fire Department where he gave his best to assure the safety of firefighters who he considered his family. He was an elder and Bible teacher at First Alliance Church in Raleigh. Before that, he served in those capacities at Morgantown Christian & Missionary Alliance Church in Morgantown, WV. He loved his family and Jesus with all of his heart.
Mike was a great lover of the outdoors who always said that he needed regular doses of “Vitamin N” (nature). He enjoyed camping, hiking, and especially bicycling. He was also an accomplished amateur photographer.
Mike epitomized the concept of “servant leadership” and was willing to take on with gusto any task that needed to be done. He excelled at many skills and was a first-rate teacher, carpenter, plumber, gardener, mechanic, electrician, photographer, cook, and all-around handyman. He always made a point to build relationships with his neighbors and made a special effort to help those who needed assistance by shoveling snow and helping with other tasks.
He is survived by his wife, Vicki (Williams) Deem; two sons, Jason Deem of Wake Forest and Joe Deem and partner Katy Dillard of Durham; brother Bryan Deem and wife Denise of Morgantown, WV; sister Tamera Deem of Maidsville, WV; and four nephews, Andrew Kapaldo, Christopher Kapaldo, Zachary Deem, and Derek Deem.
A memorial service will be held at First Alliance Church, 4400 Buffaloe Road, Raleigh at 1:00 pm on Thursday, February 25, 2016. A second memorial will be held in Morgantown, WV in the spring.
Memorial contributions may be made to Falls of Neuse Senior Living, 5204 Cherrywood Court, Raleigh NC 27609.
