George Franklin Hackney, Jr., aged 77, passed on January 24, 2022 in Raleigh, North Carolina. He was born November 27, 1944 in Durham, North Carolina, to George F. Hackney and Carrie Belle Kernodle. He graduated North Carolina State University with a Master’s degree in Business administration in 1967. During his time at NCSU Frank was a member of Alpha Phi Omega Fraternal Organization and a defensive lineman for the Wolfpack football team, which gave him much pride throughout his life.
Frank worked for the North Carolina Governor’s Highway Safety Program for over 25 years, where he was he external manager and grants manager. He managed federal grants across the state for traffic units regarding their equipment and training. He also managed the “Booze It or Lose It” campaign and “Click It or Ticket” campaign and checkpoints. He was a strong supporter of local and state government- acting as treasurer for County Commissioner, Betty Lou Ward for over three decades.
He was a pillar of faith, love and family in the community. Frank was a member at Hudson Memorial Presbyterian Church; a proud father, mentor and friend to his two sons, an amazing grandfather, and a loving husband to his late wife, Patricia. He always made time for his family and did whatever it took to make sure they were happy, healthy and safe. This love extended to all that he met- Frank was always willing to open his home, heart and arms to anyone that needed it.
He is survived by his sons, George Franklin Hackney III of Southern Pines, and Steven Thomas Hackney of Raleigh; and granddaughter, Ava Grace Hackney of Carthage, North Carolina.
