We were honored to have had George Hubert Holland, Jr. in our lives as a father, grandfather, uncle, and a fellow servant of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Born in humble beginnings in Johnston County, on August 1, 1933 to Rena Balance and George Hubert Holland, he would eventually move to Raleigh where he would plant his roots and start a family. Our family will forever feel a great void once filled by him, but we are comforted to know that he is now at peace and in the arms of Jesus.
A graduate of Hugh Morson High School, George served his country for over thirty years first in the US Army, then in the NC National Guard, retiring with the rank of Command Sargeant Major and maintained a patriotic spirit throughout his life. Our family lost his beloved Peggy in 2013, to whom he was a wonderful husband to for almost sixty years.
George attended NCSU, and never missed the “Pack” playing on TV, owning an amazing collection of NCSU t-shirts. He was employed with the NC Department of Transportation for forty years, as a highway design engineer.
George made his greatest impact in the churches that he was a member of. Many young people were influenced and mentored by George and Peggy on church trips, most notably youth group mission trips. George was also involved in the Boy Scouts of America, bringing his sons up in the traditions of the organization. They fondly remember putting flags on the graves of fallen soldiers, with measured painstaking accuracy, every Memorial Day. George was a perfectionist.
He loved his family and he loved his country, but he loved the Lord more and he lived his Christian walk, out loud in his daily life. His family will miss his wit and his generosity. George made a friend everywhere he went and his absence will be an awkward silence in the lives of all who were blessed to know him.
Surviving him are two sons, Mark Holland (Jennelle) and Clay Holland (Pamela). He had eight grandchildren; Ashleigh Mills (Chad), Ethan Holland (Michelle), Michaela Casey, Angela Rich (Teddy), Annaleen Holland, Daniel Holland (Cari), Josiah Holland, Timanda Holland. He also had five great grandchildren. He adored them all.
Visitation will be held on Friday, July 11, 2025 from 11:00 am until 12 Noon at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home on Millbrook Road. A Funeral Service will begin at 12 Noon at the funeral home chapel, with a Graveside Service to follow at 2:00 pm at Montlawn Memorial Park Cemetery in Raleigh.
