

George Edgar Wells, 77, passed away peacefully on April 26th, surrounded by his loving family. George was born in Durham, NC to B.C. and Alma Wells. The family later moved to Henderson, NC, where he graduated from Henderson High School. He received a degree in Civil Engineering from NC State University and began his career with the NC Department of Transportation, earning his registration as a Professional Engineer and rising to the level of State Highway Administrator. He retired from the Department of Transportation with 32 years of public service and was honored by Governor Martin with The Order of the Long Leaf Pine Award. After retirement, George worked as a consulting engineer with Kimley-Horn in Land Development Service.
Left behind to cherish his memory are his wife of 57 years, Jo Ann Eaves Wells, daughter and husband, Vicki and Don Webb; son and wife, Terry and Judy Wells; grandsons, Joseph and Jared Wells; precious great granddaughter, Alyssa Wells; brother Dewey Wells and sister and husband, Karen and Will Manley. Also surviving are Jo Ann’s brother and wife, Carlton and Betsy Eaves; Jo Ann’s sister, Erma Wynne, and many cousins, nieces and nephews, all of whom he dearly loved. George was preceded in passing by his parents, B.C. and Alma, his brother’s wife, Ann, and his sister’s son, Hunter.
George enjoyed traveling with family and friends and spent most of his leisure time hunting and fishing and simply being outdoors enjoying God’s creation.
A memorial service in his honor will be held on Tuesday, April 30th at 3:00 PM at New Hope Baptist Church, 4301 Louisburg Rd., Raleigh, NC 27604.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you make a donation to the “New Hope Baptist Church Columbarium Fund.”
