Born on January 17, 1937 in Ashville, North Carolina, Gilbert was the only son of Al and Sara Rothstein.
At the age of 5 years old, the family relocated to Raleigh.
Gilbert graduated from Needham B. Broughton High School in 1954, and then attended UNC Chapel Hill, where he learned to be a diehard Tar Heel fan. After college, he spent many years working in the family business where he developed exceptional sales techniques that he used in other jobs and endeavors. Throughout life, Gilbert displayed an infectious sense of humor, and kindness. He loved family and friends unconditionally and loved to brag about the accomplishments of his children and grandchildren. Gilbert was the life of every party and loved to cook. He would feed anyone brave enough to try something new and unique, often with a little extra spice.
Gilbert is survived by his loving family: his wife of 40years, Margaret; his daughters Traci (Joe), Johnna (Mike), Lisa and Andrea; his son Philip (Jessica); 13 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren; and his sister Harriet Karesh. Gilbert was preceded in death by his parents, Al and Sara Rothstein, and his sister
Lyn Satisky.
A graveside funeral service will take place 11:00 a.m. on November 14th at Raleigh Hebrew Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer
Center, or the charity of your choice.
