Born on July 19, 1946, in Arnhem, The Netherlands, Jansje was the daughter of Gerrit and Elisabeth (née van de Steeg) Lichtenberg and known as the “Peace Baby” to her family and her dad called her his “sunshine”. She was one of five siblings: Elly Lichtenberg (Hub Pittie), Beppie Arp (deceased), Gerrit Lichtenberg (Nihal), and Jan Lichtenberg.
At the age of 17, while attending a Red Cross function in Châteauroux, France, Jansje met the love of her life, John Conrad Collins. After three years of courtship, they married on January 28, 1967. Following their marriage, Jansje immigrated to the United States to begin her new life and family.
Throughout her early years in the U.S., Jansje worked in various roles, including at a craft store and a jewelry store, before becoming a preschool teacher. She also devoted herself to her family as a homemaker. In the mid-1990s, she was baptized into the Catholic Church and was an active and dedicated volunteer for many years.
Jansje was known for her many passions: she was a talented knitter, especially of baby hats and blankets, and she loved spending time with her close group of friends, affectionately known as the Divas. She was well-known for the wonderful parties she hosted, always bringing people together with warmth and laughter. She had a sweet tooth for all kinds of goodies—especially cake—and eagerly anticipated the treats her loved ones would bring when they visited. She always cherished a good sit-down with a good cup of coffee and cake, sharing conversation and laughter with family and friends. Jansje had a special fondness for flowers, and the colors pink and blue always brightened her days.
Jansje is survived by her loving husband, John Conrad; her children: Elisabeth (John), Heidi (Matt), Hanna (Adam), and Johann (Kaitlyn); and her grandchildren: Pavlos (Amalia), Isabella, Stavros, Helena, Elijah, Elle, Dean, Lennon, and Jack. Jansje is also survived by her nephew Mike who lives nearby and is lovingly included as part of her immediate family.
She was known for her loving spirit, generosity, warmth, humor, and devotion to family.
A private service will be scheduled at a later date. Jansje’s urn will be placed at St. Raphael’s in Raleigh, NC.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association.
