Jean Elmore Horner

Born in Brown's Summit, NC, to the late Charles and Mabel Lee Elmore, Jean raised her two sons in Raleigh with her husband, the late Jerry Leo Horner. She had a distinguished career as a banker and was a pioneering female leader in lending and commercial services with NCNB and State Bank of Raleigh. She was very active in North Raleigh Chapel for many years and later became a member of North Ridge Bible Chapel. After growing up as the youngest of ten on a Guilford County farm with no electricity, she managed to journey alone to South Africa as a young woman, and continued to travel around the world throughout her life, often with her merry band of friends, the Gadabouts.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her son, Charles Paul Horner, and by her siblings, Charles Roscoe Elmore, Jr., Elizabeth Johnson, Jim Elmore, Francis Corry, Edna Monnik and Gladys Moore.

She is survived by her son, Jerry Leo Horner, Jr.; her daughter-in-law, Lisa Outar; her three granddaughters, Alessandra, Genevieve and Freya Horner; her sister, Peggy Cates; her brother, Richard Elmore; her brother, Max Elmore, and his wife, Betty Carol Elmore; her sister-in-law, Paula Long, and her husband, Joel Long; her sister-in-law, Laverne Brown; her brother-in-law, David Moore; and by numerous nieces and nephews, friends and former clients who were touched by her grace, dignity and kindness. In her last years of life, she was blessed with the loving care and friendship of Linda Johnson and Leannette Jackson and their family.

Jean's family will receive friends on Friday, April 17, 2015 from 6pm to 8pm at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home at 300 St. Mary's Street, Raleigh. The funeral will be at North Ridge Bible Chapel at 7100 Harps Mill Road, Raleigh 27615 at 10am on Saturday, April 18, 2015 with burial to follow in Bailey, NC at 1:30pm.

Donations in honor of Jean's life may be made to Haven House, a non-profit which serves runaway, troubled and homeless youth and their families and where Jean served on the board for many years, and to the group Christian Missions In Many Lands, whose international missionary work she supported.
