

John Samuel Maxey, 92, passed away peacefully on September 21, 2025, in Raleigh, North Carolina. Born on October 7, 1932, in Detroit, Michigan, John lived a life marked by adventure, intellect, and deep devotion to his family and passions.
A proud veteran, John served as a navigator in the United States Air Force during the Korean Conflict. His service reflected his commitment to duty and his enduring sense of purpose. After his military career, John continued to pursue a life filled with excitement and curiosity.
John was a man of many talents and interests. He had once been a race car driver, embracing speed and precision with enthusiasm. He was also a Master scuba diver, exploring the depths of the ocean with the same vigor he brought to every endeavor. A published author, John’s love of books extended beyond reading—he contributed his own voice to the literary world with thoughtful insight and creativity.
While raising his children, he attended the University of Arizona and received his degree in Electrical Engineering. He retired from LTV, now known as Lockheed Martin, after a long and distinguished career of over 30 years.
Those who knew John will remember his hearty laugh that could fill a room and lift spirits. His love of books was matched only by his love for meaningful conversation and connection. He was a beloved father, grandfather, and friend whose presence brought warmth and joy to those around him.
John is survived by his devoted wife, Pamela Maxey; his daughter Leisha Darling, his son Dan Maxey and his daughter Darsi Grunewald; Pamela's daughter Amanda Poole; grandchildren Kalee Griffith, John Maxey, Jacob Grunewald, Rebecca Dyer, and Claire Darling. Each carries forward cherished memories of time spent with him—memories filled with laughter, wisdom, and unwavering support.
