Lois Jean Turner Simmen

Lois Jean Turner Simmen, age 88, passed away on March 14, 2016. She was born in Harrisburg, PA. to the late Gilbert and Florence Turner on January 21, 1928. Lois graduated from Harrisburg High School, before attending Syracuse University. She was married to the late Gottfried Fred Simmen Jr. in 1947. She had homes in Homestead, PA, Pleasant Hills, PA, Cheshire, CT, Valley Forge, PA, and Raleigh, NC. She spent her last years in Springmoor Retirement Community, Raleigh, NC where she succumbed to Alzheimer’s. She was a founding member of St. Matthews Methodist Church, Valley Forge, PA, where she was on many committees to raise money for the building of the church, organ and pews. She chaired the Altar Floral Guild for many years. She volunteered at Cathcart Nursing Home and Paoli Memorial Hospital where she served on the Hospital Auxiliary.

Lois is survived by her four children, Sheryl S. Crum, Patricia S. Bowes, Robert G. Simmen and W. Scott Simmen. She also leaves behind four grand-children, Catherine C. Dixon, Susan C. Rodriguez, Ryan G. Simmen and Keeley B. Simmen and four great-grand-children, Anna Lynn Butler, Laura Dixon, Wesley Rodriguez and Caroline Rodriguez.

As an active animal lover, she was known to have rescued several strays. She loved spending time with her family at her beach house in Caswell Beach, NC. She enjoyed playing and watching golf and was a member of St. David’s Country Club. For many years, she held the position of part-time Administrative Assistant for the orthodontic practice of Dr. James Greytok. Following in her father’s footsteps she was active in both the Boys Scouts and Girls Scouts of America.

Lois will be buried in a family plot at Harrisburg Cemetery.
