On February 20, Matthew David Cook was lifted into the loving arms of his heavenly Father after a nearly five-month battle against a rare autoimmune disease. He was surrounded by his wife and daughters. Matt will be remembered as a loving husband, supportive father, compassionate friend, and kind and generous man.
Matt is survived by his best friend and wife of 30 years, Holly; daughters Colleen and Meredith; brother Richard and sister-in-law Terrie; sisters-in-law Karen, Lisa and Andrea; brother-in-law Chris; several nieces and nephews; and many extended family members and in-laws. He is preceded in death by his parents, Catherine and Charles.
Matt grew up in Baltimore and Pittsburgh, where he was an avid golfer. He received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Texas at Austin, where he met Holly, and his MBA from the Wharton School. Matt began his career as a legislative director in Washington, D.C. and later worked for General Foods. He spent 22 years with Dannon, working in Ohio, New York and France. A published author, Matt had served as an independent IT project consultant since 2015.
Matt’s greatest joy in life was his family, and he loved his wife and daughters deeply. He was a soccer coach, cheerleader at countless sporting events, and mentor to many young adults. More than anything, he taught his daughters about generosity, kindness and compassion. As a member of Grace Community Church, he served as coordinator of Faith Furnishings and went on several mission trips to Appalachia, Mexico and Haiti.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, February 25, at 1:00pm at Grace Community Church, 7041 Old Wake Forest Rd, Raleigh, NC 27616. A reception will follow at the family’s home.
