Murray Unger passed away on October 4, 2013. Murray was born and raised in Petersburg, Virginia. After serving his country in World War II and graduating from The University of Virginia, Murray returned to Petersburg to join his brother, Sam, in the family business of men’s fine clothing. As partners, they operated Unger’s Men’s Clothing Store for 40 years. In 1956, Murray met Lois “Boots” Fleishman from Fayetteville, NC and on May 7th they celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary. In Petersburg, Murray and Boots raised two children: Roger Unger of Indianapolis, IN and Lisa Unger Sandman of Raleigh, NC. Murray was an avid golfer until age 80 (three holes in one), swimmer, duplicate bridge player, devoted fan of his alma mater and follower of current events, especially the financial markets. Committed to his community, Murray served two terms as President of the Petersburg Junior Chamber of Commerce and many years on the Board of Trustees of Congregation Brith Achim. A loving husband, father and grandfather, Murray will be remembered for his sharp mind and easy disposition, but mostly for being a gentleman in the finest and truest sense-always respectful, kind with his words and genuinely interested in the lives of his family and many friends. Murray was predeceased by his parents, Sydney and Rose Unger, Brothers Sam and Allan Unger and his sister, Marjorie Bayersdorfer. Murray is survived by his wife, Boots Unger; sister Bette Kiernan; his son and daughter-in-law, Roger and Anne Unger; his daughter and son-in-law Lisa and Michael Sandman; and, four grandchildren: Alyssa Unger, Alexis Unger, Ryan Sandman and Marshall Sandman. The family would like to sincerely thank Dr. Steven Liebowitz and the entire staff of The Rosewood Health Center at The Cypress of Raleigh for the compassionate care extended to Murray throughout his stay at The Rosewood. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Congregation Brith Achim, 314 South Boulevard, Petersburg, VA 23805; Congregation Beth Or, 5315 Creedmoor Road, Raleigh, NC 27612; or, a charity of personal choice.
