

Shirley Mae Hedeen went to join her Lord and Savior on May 29, 2016 surrounded by her family. She was born August 10, 1937 in Mason City, Iowa, the daughter of Harold William Johnston and Waiva Doreen (Toepfer) Johnston.
Shirley was a devout Christian, and a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She married the love of her life on December 27, 1956 in Bedford, Ohio. Her husband at the time was in the U.S. Navy. Shortly afterwards, she accompanied him to Hawaii. After her husband left the Navy, she became a devoted housewife raising five children. Wherever they moved during her husband's career with IBM, she became involved in church activities and her children's activities. She was an avid reader of religious books, building a library of over 2,000 books.
Shirley loved to travel. She made several trips with her husband to many European countries. They also traveled extensively in the United States in their motor home.
Shirley was a long time member of St. Mark's United Methodist Church and Trinity Baptist Church here in Raleigh.
She is survived by her husband of 59 years, Albert Hedeen Sr; three sons, Verner Hedeen of Raleigh, NC, Rev. David Hedeen of Boonville, NY and LTC (Ret.) Albert Hedeen Jr of Bel Air, MD; two daughters, Valerie Humphries of Raleigh, NC and Shirley Hedeen of Richmond, VA; and five grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her sister, Beverly Lages, and brothers, Marvin and James Johnston.
The family will receive friends starting at 1pm on Thursday, June 2, 2016 at Trinity Baptist Church. A memorial service will follow at 2pm. Inurnment will be in the church columbarium.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Trinity Baptist Church Mission Program.
