

Stuart graduated from the University of Illinois with a Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry. He proudly served his country in the United States Navy as a Seaman First class. Stuart also attended Miami University in Miami, FL and worked as a Chemist for the EPA. Stuart met the love of his life Edith Loewenthal while in Miami and they were married on July 28, 1959. In 1973, Stuart and his family were transferred to Raleigh, NC where he and his family have since remained. He retired from the EPA in 1982.
Stuart was an intelligent and well-read man. He was a member of American Chemical Society, Sigma Xi, Phi Kappa Phi, and Phi Lambda Upsilon. Stuart received the awards of “With Highest Honors”, University of Illinois Diploma and Bausch and Lomb Medal for Science.
Stuart had many interests; he raised Sea Horses and had an avid interest in marine life and loved the Florida Everglades. He enjoyed writing and had a publication “A Method for the Determination of Dialkyl Phosphate Residues in Urnine” Stuart was ahead of his time in nutrition, he was counting calories and fat content long before it was ever an everyday concern. He always wanted to make certain he and his family ate right and was healthy.
Stuart will be remembered as a loving, caring and devoted family man to his wife, children and grandchildren.
Stuart is preceded in death by his loving wife, Edith Reid and his brother, Arthur Reid.
Stuart is survived by his son, Andrew Reid; daughter, Marguerite Gross and husband David; grandchildren, Anna and Adam Gross; sister, Virginia Ames and husband Mervyn and nieces, Helene Soukup and Elizabeth Schwarz.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, January 8, 2014 in the Mausoleum Chapel of Pine Forest Memorial Gardens, Wake Forest, NC. The family will receive friends starting at 1:30 p.m. prior to the service. Interment will be held at Pine Forest Memorial Gardens.
