

Al McKenzie Smith, born on March 22, 1953, passed away on January 7, 2026, at the age of 72. Residing in Chesterfield, Virginia, Al was a respected figure in his community and will be dearly missed by all who knew him.
Al was preceded in death by his father, Alvin Smith, his mother, Emma Maye, and his beloved wife, Alicia Gwathmey-Smith. He is survived by his children, Synthia Boisseau, Shirelle Washington (bonus daughter), Alvonia Clawson, and Darius Gwathmey (step-son). Al was a proud grandfather to Zay Quez Boisseau, KahLeeah Boisseau, Brandon Boisseau, and Harmoni Clawson. He is also survived by his brothers, Larry Smith and Wayne Crewe (best friend/bonus brother), and his sisters, Mabel Earley, Karen Smith, and Jean Smith. He leaves behind Lillian Boisseau and special friend Cynthia Nicholson.
Al had a distinguished career as a Sr. Project Manager with Summit Construction and Environmental Services. He was a dedicated member of Emmanuel Restoration Church, where he served as a Deacon. Al was also a Sensei Master in the style of Kyu Shin Shuri, holding a 10th-degree black belt. He was the owner of IBS Inc. and a member of the Suburban Gents Motorcycle Club in Richmond, Virginia, established in 1982. Additionally, he was involved in the Blackwell Community Martial Arts Program.
Visitation will be held at Nelsen Funeral Home, located at 4650 South Laburnum Avenue, Richmond, Virginia, on January 21, 2026, from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm. A funeral service will take place at the same location on January 22, 2026, at 1:00 pm. The committal service will follow at Maury Cemetery, 2700 Maury Street, Richmond, Virginia, at 3:00 pm.
Al McKenzie Smith will be remembered for his dedication to his family, his community, and his many passions. His legacy will live on in the hearts of those who loved him.
