Our beloved Allan “Al” David Newberry, 59, of Varina, VA passed away on Saturday, April 4, 2020, after a courageous battle with COPD. He went peacefully while being lovingly attended to by Tony Geslak and Cathy Brown.
Al was preceded in death by his mother, Joyce Ann O’Brien Newberry. He is survived by his son, Leo Allan Newberry, and his wife CC; his father, Johnny Mack Newberry, and his wife Peggy; his brother, Kenneth “Dee” Cabel Newberry, and his wife Karen; three nephews, Kenneth Craig Shockley, Brannon Stone Newberry, and Blake Mitchell Newberry; uncle, Sammy Jack Newberry; two aunts, Belinda Newberry Flournoy, and her husband Steve, and Marsha Kay O’Brien Baughan, and her husband Bill; as well as several loving cousins. Al also leaves behind numerous friends who lovingly referred to him as Shrimpy or Pirate Al.
From playing at the playground at Nanny Happy’s on Oregan Hill, to becoming a Blue Devil at Varina High School, to living in the basement at Granny Lena’s in Lakeside, Al made friends everywhere he went. Al was very charismatic, had a magnetic personality and was always up for a good time. He had an intense love for motorcycles. Whether it be riding them, racing them, fixing them, selling them and of course, crashing them, Al didn’t consider himself a biker, but a motorcycle enthusiast. He was the proud owner of East End Custom Cycles in Highland Springs along with his longtime friend, Donald Foreman. Al knew how to fix pretty much anything, and was always willing to help out anyone in need. Al also had a deep love for fishing. You could often find him at the river, or off the shores of Key West, doing what he loved best.
A special thank you goes out to Marchetta Parker and countless others for being there in his time of need.
