Donald Wayne Unland

Don was born August 13, 1944 in Channahon, Illinois to Harold and Ardell Unland. He lived in Illinois with his first wife Rose, and their children, and worked as an expeditor for Caterpillar. In 1986 Don moved to Richmond Virginia and married Elaine Rensing of New Baden, Illinois.

Don was a volunteer for the visually handicapped and an avid historian, with a wealth of knowledge of the Civil War. He enjoyed traveling, reading every day, drawing comics, and spending time in the yard with his faithful canine companion Molly, who followed him everywhere.

Don is survived by his beloved wife Elaine; his children: Julie (Robert), Scott, Donald (Jennifer), Laura (Timothy), Daniel (Meghan), Todd (Van), Tina (Gordon); his brothers Harold, Ronald, and Gerald; as well as 21 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild. Don was preceded in death by his first canine companion Mike, his sisters Phyllis Unland, Mildred Gang, and Lorene Ramsey, all of Illinois.

Don's visitation will be held from 11am - 12:30pm, Thursday August 12, 2021 at Nelsen Funeral Home - Laburnum Chapel. A funeral service will follow immediately. Afterwards we will process to Hollywood Cemetery for a 2pm Graveside Service.
