Waiting to greet him are his parents, Rudolph and Helen; older brother, Johnny; favorite brother, Robert; and nephews, Jonathan, Christopher, and Daniel. A pack of beagles will be joyously wagging their tails.
Trained as a HVAC tech, Gary successfully ran his own business, Gary’s Maintenance Service, for many years becoming a certified “Jack-Of-All-Trades”. Though not particularly religious, he appreciated Mother Nature and spent many happy hours fishing. He hunted until he realized he didn’t like getting up early and being cold.
Gary was never in the military, but that did not stop him from enjoying minor skirmishes with family and friends. Like his father, he relished a lively discussion, and also like his father, he was never wrong. As Gary got older, he was proud of his garden and all of its bounty. His canned tomatoes were delicious!
Gary never married and had no children, but he was “Uncle Gary” to all the kids who knew him. With a twinkle in his eye, he made almost any story believable, whether it was about the “corner snakes” that lived under the house, or the fact that you can lick your own elbow if you try hard enough.
Gary was the last of his siblings. He missed his brother, Robert, terribly and lost some of his zest for life after Robert passed. He had lots of friends, especially old friends, among them, Allen Ferguson, Mike Fox, Brandon Hargan, and Fletcher Voelcker. He will be missed so much by so many. He also leaves behind his sisters-in-law, DeAnn Norris and Dawn Brightwell; nephew, Jerry Harlow; and best cousin, Wayne Lowery.
The family will receive friends from 4 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, August 15, at Nelsen Funeral Home, 4650 S. Laburnum Ave., Richmond, Va. 23231. A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, August 16, in Providence U.M.C. Cemetery, 4001 New Kent Hwy., Quinton, Va. 23141.
In lieu of flowers, tell a kid something silly, but believable – that would make Gary smile. Oh, and don’t dress up for his services!
