Elizabeth “Betsey” Hoefler McIntyre, age 95, of Rochester Hills, Michigan, passed away February 1, 2022. Betsey was born on February 16, 1926, one of four children to Carl and Mena (Cooper) Hoefler, in Detroit, Michigan. A graduate of Cooley High School in Detroit, class of 1943, she spent some of her young adult life modeling for J.L. Hudson’s before earning her bachelor’s degree in social work from Michigan State University. Betsey married Jack Barclay McIntyre MD, on June 17, 1947; their reception was at the Botsford Inn, and they honeymooned at the St. Claire Inn, all in southeast Michigan. She lived and taught her passion for self-development through her active engagement with family, community, and in her own practice as a therapist over the years. A lover of words, she wrote an advice column for the Detroit News from 1962 – 1963, under the name “Ruth Alden,” and volunteered her time to teach literacy classes to adults and children at the public library. Betsey was an enthusiastic member of MENSA and AAUW.
Betsey is survived by her sister Carole Crum, her children Jack (Betsy) McIntyre, and Sally (Jim) MacBeth; grandchildren Jack (Jin) McIntyre III, Nicholas (Elizabeth) McIntyre, Elizabeth (Brandon) Hopkins, Stephen (Erica) McIntyre, Connor MacBeth, Colin (Alaina) MacBeth, and Ross (Julie) MacBeth; and nine great-grandchildren. Betsey was predeceased by her husband, Jack B. McIntyre, M.D., her parents, Carl and Mena Hoefler, and brothers Don and Bill Hoefler.
A funeral service will be held Sunday February 6, 2022 at 3pm (Instate 2:30 p.m.) at Unity Church of Rochester, located at 1038 Harding Avenue, Rochester Hills, MI.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Betsey’s honor to the Community Foundation of Greater Rochester, please include AAUW in the memo line, envelopes will be available at the service.
