He was born in Pontiac on May 18th, 1943. Sylvan graduated from Avondale High School and received a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from Lawrence Technological University.
He has shared life with his companion of 18 years and loving caregiver, Cheryl Hettwer.
Sylvan had a career as an engineer in the automotive industry for over 45 years. He worked for General Motors, Nitto Denko, and Permacel.
Sylvan loved all things outdoors, northern Michigan, deer hunting, snowmobiling, tinkering in the garage, and all forms of auto racing. He attended the Indianapolis 500 every year.
In addition to Cheryl Hettwer, he is survived by his two children, Erik Elie and Amy Bass; his six grandchildren, Sydney Smith, Erika Smith, Sloan Elie, Sabrina Elie, Matt Smith, and A.J. Smith; his sister, Connie Taylor; and former wife, Deborah Elie.
Sylvan wanted to celebrate his life with friends and family. An open house celebration will be held on November 20th, 2021 from 2 to 5 p.m. at The American Legion, 234 Walnut Blvd, Rochester, Michigan.
In lieu of flowers, Sylvan’s loved ones request donations be made to Leader Dogs for the Blind in Sylvan’s memory.
