Tung Hsiang Weng

Tung Hsiang Weng, 88, of Rochester Hills, MI, passed away on May 31, 2021. He was born in Fujian, China, on January 16, 1933, to Tin Fan Weng and M.C. Tcheng. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree from National Taiwan University in 1956, Master of Science from the University of Iowa in 1959, and PhD from the University of Missouri in 1967, all in Electrical Engineering. He worked in the electronics industry in the area of electronics circuit design before beginning his academic career as an Assistant Professor at the University of Missouri in 1967, then at Oakland University in Rochester, Michigan in 1969. He was promoted to Associate Professor in 1971, and to full Professor in 1983. He maintained an active, federally funded academic research program in semiconductor properties and devices. He also worked over the summers for Bendix Research Lab in Southfield, MI, Sperry Univac in St. Paul, MN, and US Naval Research Lab in Washington, DC. He retired from Oakland University in 2000. In his personal life, he married Marie-Ange Kouo on June 17, 1961, in Chicago, IL. Their first two sons, David and Eugene, were born in Chicago, and their 3rd son Andrew was born in Columbia, MO. The family later settled in Rochester, MI. He enjoyed traveling, gardening, and helping others settle into life in the US. He and Marie were active in the community and volunteered for many cultural events sponsored by the Association for Chinese Americans and Council of Asian Pacific Americans. He was survived by his wife Marie and three sons, David (Christie), Eugene (Margie), and Andrew (Kerry), grandchildren Tyler, Garret, Sophie, Natalie, Jason, Alex, Diana, and Max, and his brother Tung Sen Weng. A private family ceremony will be held on Friday, June 11, 2021, at Pixley Funeral Home.
