Born to Gertrude and Rudy Walter on January 10th, 1928, "Ginny" grew up as a child in Detroit during the depression years, attending Goodale and Von Stoeben grade schools. She attended Denby High where she played the clarinet, was elected Treasurer of her class, and was voted Cutest Girl. She was the first in her family to attend college and was accepted to Michigan State. She joined Sigma Kappa Sorority and was honored to be a member of the 1948 Homecoming Court. Most importantly, Michigan State is where she met and fell in love with Ray. On April 22, 1950 she and Ray were married and went on to have 4 children (Peter, David, Lisa and Michelle). Once the children were in school, she commuted from home in St. Clair Shores to finish her teaching degree at Wayne State. While active members in the Jaycee's, she competed and won Mrs. Michigan Jaycee in 1963.
That same year, Ginny and Ray moved to Rochester Hills where they became very active in the community. They joined Heart of the Hills swim club and Avon Players. She and Ray acted in many productions and played the lead roles opposite each other in “Cactus Flower”. She joined the faculty at Rochester High School where she taught home economics for 14 years. They eventually moved into Brookwood and experienced the joy of grandparenting their growing family of 14 grandchildren and 28 great grandchildren who lovingly called her "G3" (Great Grandma Ginny). Ginny loved playing golf at Brookwood, Great Oaks, and Shadow Woods in Bonita Springs Florida. She also loved playing tennis and skiing at Boyne Highlands as well as bocce ball, bridge, and mahjongg.
Ginny loved life, traveling, and particularly building friendships, always making new ones while treasuring old ones. She was generous in giving her time and energy to support her community. She was a charter member and Past President of the Assistance League of Southeast Michigan. She was also past President of the Meadowbrook Theatre Guild, and one of the founding members of the Community Foundation of Greater Rochester Women's Fund. Finally, she and Ray were active members at St Paul's United Methodist Church Rochester for over 40 years, where they had many friends to share their faith in Jesus Christ.
Ginny will be remembered most for her unique ability to make each of her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, and friends feel special. Her deep love for her family and friends and her devotion to serving those in the Rochester community led to the proud moment when she and Ray were honored as Grand Marshals of the 2012 Rochester Christmas Parade.
