How do you describe a life well-lived? William Patrick Finneran, Jr. - or W.P. as he was best known - could probably answer that question for you. Born in the rolling hills of Kentucky, W.P. grew up in Portsmouth, Ohio and graduated from Portsmouth High School where he was a star linebacker on the football team earning the nickname “Bulldog” for his relentless play. Following graduation, W.P. joined the U.S. Navy and was incredibly proud to have been part of the first crew on the USS Saratoga (CV-60) when it was commissioned in 1956. Serving his country was a great honor for him. Even to his last days, he spoke proudly of his time on the Saratoga and enjoyed sharing stories with his family.
W.P. married his wife Ruth in 1961 and had two beautiful daughters together. They spent most of their marriage living in Michigan as he completed seminary at Midwestern Baptist College and faithfully tended to his work at General Motors as an electrician. He served for many years as a Sunday School Teacher and Senior Ministries Leader at North Perry Baptist Church. He loved his God, his family, his country, and his dog P.J. W.P. was a member of Oxbow Lake Baptist Church. He had a special sense of humor only those closest to him would understand but also cherish in their memories.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 60 years, Ruth Finneran as well as his daughters Debbie (Tim) Summerford and Diane (Virgil) Baldwin in addition to his five grandchildren, Lauren, Missy & Gracie Summerford and Justin (Ashleigh) Baldwin & Megan (Chris) Harvey.
The family will welcome visitors on Tuesday, October 26th beginning at 10 a.m. at the Elton Black and Sons Funeral Home – Highland Chapel in Highland, MI followed immediately by a funeral at 12 noon.
