Yot Lim was born on October 1, 1924 in Guangdong Province, China. He immigrated to America in 1938 at the age of 14, settling in Detroit, Michigan with his brother and father. He married Elayne in 1959 and together they raised four children: Leslie (Don Nixon), Curtis (Jing Lv), Christine (Tien Do), and Michael (Lynn Kim). They then went on to open two successful restaurants, the Ming Palace in Southfield, Michigan, and the New China Restaurant in Troy.
After surviving and recovering from tuberculosis, Yot Lim assumed he would never live past the age of 30, but he lived well beyond that to the age of 99 and got to see all his children graduate from college, marry, and give him four beautiful grandchildren: Kyle, Jillian, Elise and Ian.
His favorite activities were cooking for his wife and family, traveling, photography, reading his daily Chinese newspaper and being a loyal fan of the Detroit Lions. He also returned to his village of Ting Sum several times with his family to visit the home he was born in and pay respects to his mother. Yot Lim was a devoted husband, a loving father and grandfather. He passed away on November 13, 2023, surrounded by his wife and children.
In lieu of flowers, Yot's friends and family may wish to donate to one of his favorite charities in his honor:
