

George H. Varner of Victor and formerly of Elmira and Watkins Glen, died peacefully at home, Monday, May 12, 2014 at age 93. Predeceased by his parents, Walter and Atlanta; and sister, Betty Fassler. He is survived by “The Best Decision He Ever Made”, his wife of nearly 66 years, Marie (Mason); Proudest Accomplishments, his children, Jack (Nancy), James (Cynthia), and Margaret (Ralph) Palumbieri; Most Cherished Blessings, his grandchildren, Carolyn (Jeffrey) Fisher, Rachel Varner, Adam and Cara Palumbieri; step-grandchildren, Laura Elia, Glenn, Gregory and Gavin Bartholomew. Also survived by several nieces and nephews.
George served with the US Army in the South Pacific during WWII and worked as a branch manager of Marine Midland Bank in Watkins Glen, where he retired after more than 42 years. He was a 32nd Degree Mason with Chemung Valley Masonic Lodge #350, and a member Kalurah Shrine and St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in E. Bloomfield. George was a private pilot who loved to fly. He was proud to have been part of Rochester Honor Flight, and celebrated his 80th birthday with a hot-air balloon ride. He also enjoyed fishing, hunting, and playing golf.
A Celebration of George’s Life will be held Sunday, June 1, 2014 at 3:30pm, Geneseo United Methodist Church, 4520 Genesee St., Geneseo, NY 14454. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Ontario-Yates Hospice, 756 Pre-emption Rd., Geneva, NY 14456 or a charity of your choice.
