Born on February 3, 1944, in Rochester, NY, Smittie was a proud alumnus of McQuaid Jesuit High School (Class of 1962) and was a long-time employee of Weber’s Dairy and Upstate Milk. When he wasn’t embellishing a story, Smittie could be found on the waters of Lake Ontario, where he frequently sailed at the Rochester Yacht Club. He was passionate about skiing and has been described as a vision of strength and grace on the slopes. Smittie enjoyed music and frequented concerts at the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra.
A talented handyman, he spent years rebuilding and transforming his home with a high level of skill and craftsmanship that can be seen in every corner of his Blue Pond residence.
He was a devoted husband to his best friend Jean O’Brien, with whom he shared over 52 years of love and companionship. As a father, he was a constant example of integrity and support to his three children: Kathleen (Brendan) Houghton, Kelly (Patricio Sorensen) O’Brien, William (Chausey Ashey) O’Brien. He was proud of his seven grandchildren, Connor, Maggie, Max, Liam, Ian, Wendy, and Owen, each of whom he adored and cherished.
Smittie was the oldest brother to his four siblings: Michael (Marjory) O’Brien, Brendan (Eileen) O’Brien, Kevin (Linda) O’Brien, and Sean O’Brien. These five brothers had a special bond based on mutual respect, humor, family lore and camaraderie, they were also the foundation for the broader Lake Road band of brothers.
He will be remembered for his kindness, loyalty, integrity and his ability to tell a great story. His family will forever remember his dedication to work and family and treasure the memories that he created.
