

Katherine M. Powell, 92 of Brighton Township, passed away, Sunday April 12, 2015, while under the compassionate care of Good Samaritan Hospice, Heritage Valley Beaver. She was born January 21, 1923 in Sewickley, daughter of the late John and Katherine Marek. Through the years, Katherine enjoyed a variety of interests and past-times which included bowling, bingo and playing the card game 500 with her friends. She loved the outdoors and nature, and could be found mowing her lawn, tending the garden or feeding the birds and wildlife.
Early in her adult life she was employed in the dietary department of the Beaver Valley Geriatric Center. When the children came along, she focused her love and attention on them.
In addition to her parents, Katherine was preceded in death by her husband of nearly 60 years: Lawrence Powell, who passed in 2006; two brothers: John Marek, Jr. and Tom Marek; four sisters: Annie Lesobic; Josephine Young; Jennie Ritter and Pauline Black.
She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law: Deanna (Pete) Marcellus, New Brighton; Laurie (Greg) Hope, Pleasant Hills; a grandson: Mike (Marjorie) Marcellus, New Brighton; a step-granddaughter: Terri Jo Marcellus, Beaver Falls; four grandchildren: Adam, Seth, Eli and Matt; her brother: Joseph Marek of Penn Hills; her sister: Francis Massimini of Arnold; two sisters-in-law: Ruth Minkus and Marie Spithaler; her brothers-in-law: Richard (Thelma) Powell and Gerald (Janet) Powell; numerous nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday, April 15, 2015 from 2 to 8 p.m. in the SAUL-GABAUER FUNERAL HOME, INC., 273 Route 68, Rochester (adjacent to Sylvania Hills Memorial Park Mausoleum). Private entombment will follow in the Sylvania Hills Mausoleum.
