Robert Thomson, age 81, of O'Hara Township, died peacefully on October 29th. He was born on July 10, 1942 and grew up in Dunfermline, Scotland. He was the son of Marjorie and Duncan, and younger brother to Bruce Thomson.
Robert was accomplished both academically and professionally. He earned his undergraduate degree in Economics from the University of Strathclyde, where he was awarded with first class honors. Robert went on to obtain his Master’s degree from The London School of Economics, and later, an Executive MBA from the University of Pittsburgh.
In 1971, Robert and his wife, Carol, moved from England to Belgium, where he joined Westinghouse Nuclear Europe. He was the Company Controller, and the youngest and first non-American Vice President. Robert and Carol moved from Belgium to Pittsburgh, PA in 1980, where he became Controller of the Westinghouse Nuclear Fuel Division. He stayed with Westinghouse until his retirement in 1997. He went on to pursue executive consulting positions in Finance before finally retiring in 2008.
Even though he became a U.S. citizen in 1993, Robert was always passionate about his Scottish heritage and had a “joie de vivre” when talking about Scotland and the many historic links it had to Pittsburgh.
Robert is survived by daughters, Nichola Rainey (Brian) and Johanna Gierl (Kevin), and four grandchildren, Katherine, Gwendelyn, Shepard, and Elizabeth.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the Saul-Gabauer Funeral Home 273 Rt. 68 Rochester, PA 15074
