Dewey C. “Gus” Starnes, 87, of Rockford, IL, passed away peacefully, Monday evening, November 14, 2022 surrounded by his loving family. He was born January 13, 1935 in Greenville, TN, the son of Dewey M. and Nixie (Booker) Starnes. Gus served in the United States Marine Corp from 1952-1956. Upon his discharge from the Marines, he married his sweetheart, Sharon Cardey on March 11, 1956 in Rockford. He worked for Nicor, formerly Northern Illinois Gas Company for many years until retiring. He was a faithful member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, where he played on the church Dartboard team. Gus was a jack of all trades who loved collecting coins, hunting, fishing and working on cars. He was a man who always put his family first, and he will be deeply missed.
Gus is survived by his loving wife, Sharon; children, Danny Starnes, Matthew Starnes, Mark (Betty) Starnes and Linda (David) Johnson; 8 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; as well as nieces, nephews and cousins in Tennessee. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Eve Harwood.

A visitation will be held from 3-6 p.m., Sunday, November 20, 2022 at Advantage Funeral Home, 7000 W. State St, Rockford, IL 61102. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Monday, November 21, 2022, St. Paul Lutheran Church, 4881 Kilburn Ave, Rockford, IL 61101. Entombment in Willwood Burial Park.
