Gordon was born on September 16, 1927 in Rockford, Illinois to Edwin and Myrtle Johnson. He graduated from Rockford East High School in 1946 and served in the U.S. Army 1st Cavalry in Japan 1947 – 1948. He was a plastering contractor for over 40 years in Rockford.
On October 19, 1996, he married Anne Totenhagen. They lived an active life together in Rockford enjoying travel, hobbies and their families.
Gordon was always passionate about life. He was an athlete, sportsman, tradesman, volunteer, craftsman, father, grandfather, husband and a friend to many people. Later in life, he enjoyed raising racing pigeons, turning fine wood bowls and working at the food Pantry. He was always known for his wit, smile and compassionate spirit.
He was preceded in death by his father Edwin, his mother Myrtle, and his brother and sisters: Bob, Kathleen and Carol. He is survived by his wife Anne; his children: Steve, Dan, Gordie and Cheryl; stepchildren: Donald, Christopher, Kim, Kevin, Daniel and all his grandchildren.
Gordon will always be remembered for being a proud man that lived his 92 years to their fullest.
Memorial service to celebrate Gordon’s life will be 5:30 pm on Friday, October 25, 2019 at Christ Lutheran Church 425 Riverside in Belvidere with Military Honors to follow; visitation for Gordon will be from 4:30 until 5:30 pm at the church.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Rock River Valley food Pantry or WomenSpace of Rockford in memorial of Gordon.
