James Ray Ekberg, 65, of Rockford, IL, passed away unexpectedly, on Tuesday, October 21, 2025. He was born June 14, 1960 in Rockford, IL, the son of James R. and Anna (Liatto) Ekberg. He was employed at Alden Debes for 22 years and went on to work for Cherry Valley Elementary School for 4 years before retiring. James enjoyed fishing. He liked watching baseball, basketball and wrestling. James was a Chicago Bears and Cubs fan. He had a fascination with eagles, and had a vast collection. He enjoyed being outside and doing yard work. James was a soft-spoken and good hearted man who would help anyone he could within his ability. He will be deeply missed.
James is survived by his sisters, Stephanie Jackson, Andrea (Brian) Johnson and Tammy (Sid) Matthews; daughter, Kayla Burke; as well numerous nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, sister Laurie Walters and brother Craig Ekberg.
A visitation will be held from 2:30-3:30 p.m., Wednesday, October 29, 2025 at Advantage Funeral Home, 7000 W. State St, Rockford, IL. A funeral service will follow at 3:30 p.m. Cremation rites to follow.
